I glanced toward the door of my home office, imagining I heard someone in the hallway. But no, I was still alone in the house. I glanced at my watch for the tenth time that hour. It was getting late, and there was still no sign of Ellie.
My emotions were swinging wildly from worry to frustration and back again. Was she hurt? Had something happened? How had her first day at Jumpstart gone? But I knew that she was probably fine. She just, you know, had a life. She didnât have to come straight home to tell me about her day.
I could feel my annoyance growing each time I checked my phone and saw no new messages from her. The least she could have done would be to let me know that she would be late coming home. Then again, it wasnât like she owed me anything. Hell, I was the one who had refused to tell her my plans for the day when she first moved in. I had set us up for this.
But it didnât feel good, sitting and waiting, wondering if she was going to come home that night. Because my gut kept insisting she was out celebrating with someone else, that she was going to go home with someone else. After all, I had made it clear that there was no future in Ellie and me. She was free to sleep with whomever she liked.
I felt sick to my stomach at the very thought of her in bed with someone else. But how else to explain the fact that she had yet to come home? She was either in a hospital somewhereâ¦or in bed with someone, somewhere.
And here Iâd had this half-baked plan in the back of my head that we would celebrate her first day at Jumpstart together. Iâd thought that we could go out and have a nice dinner or something. Not a date or anything like that. I just figured she would be excited about the new position and that I could treat her right for a night, and maybe help ease her a little further out of the funk that sheâd been in lately.
I felt another flicker of annoyance as the clock ticked past 11:00 p.m. Of course, I knew that the only person I could really be frustrated with was myself. If I wanted to take her out to celebrate, I should have at least hinted that to her, if not outright asked if she wanted to make plans for that evening. I hadnât done that, and this was the direct consequence. She had made other plans, and I was sitting here alone, trying to crunch in some late-night work as though anything could possibly distract me from the thoughts of where she might be right now.
I shook my head and turned my computer off. I wasnât getting anywhere. Might as well go to bed. I didnât need to be waiting up for her; she was a grown adult and could either get herself home orâ¦not.
